Hey everyone!
Don’t forget this weekend is the Souper Bowl! Yeah, the Super Bowl too…
We will be asking for monetary donations to support the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts via a canister drive at the Masses this weekend. No, it’s not a 2nd collection, but we ask that you consider making a donation if you can!
Since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008, the Food Bank has seen an increase in numbers of people relying on the network of food providers. However, this year the data is showing the biggest spike in recent history, likely a result of the cuts to the SNAP program, unemployment insurance, and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (or LIHEAP). They have seen a jump of as much as 67%, from 135,000 individuals to upwards of 200,000! Furthermore, those constituents who only occasionally had to access their local pantries now are relying on them to provide food for their families.
The Good News is that you can help! One dollar per person can make a huge difference. For every dollar collected, the Food Bank can provide $9 dollars worth of food, which translates into approximately 3 meals!
